BSA Netballer Kelsey Browne following her sister's path

KELSEY Browne doesn't have to look far to find inspiration to achieve her netball goals.

The talented Geelong netballer is the younger sister of emerging Australian star Madison Browne and one day hopes to emulate her sibling's career by taking to the court in the Trans Tasman ANZ Championship and possibly wear the green and gold.

Kelsey is certainly heading down the right path towards that dream after being chosen in the Victorian side as very much a bottom age player for this year's national under-21 netball titles, being held in Brisbane between September 29 and October 4.

The 18-year-old said she was shocked when told of her selection after impressing at the trials last month and during the VNL season with her side VU Western Lightning.

"I went along to the trials just for experience and I never expected to make the final team, so it was a bit of a surprise but I'm pretty excited by it," Kelsey said.

"I'm not sure I will get on the court at all at the championships, but just the experience of being there with the team will help me out a lot and hopefully get me to the next level at some stage.

"I think Maddy was exactly the same age as I am when she first made the 21s."

What makes her selection even more remarkable is that Kelsey is also still eligible for the Victorian under 19 team next year.

Kelsey and Colac's Rebecca Scott are heading to Canberra next week to take part in a training camp with the Australian under 19 squad.

The Victorian under 21 team boasts several ANZ Championships squad members, including Queensland Firebirds defender Amy Steel.

"Most of the girls have played in the under 19's or states before so I reckon it's going to be a pretty strong team," Kelsey said.

"I have no idea what the other states are going to put out there, but Victoria is expecting to finish quite high."

The wing attack said her strength and fitness has improved since joining the Barwon Sports Academy three years ago. She has now moved onto a scholarship with the VIS.

Browne has also been chosen in the Victorian Fury squad alongside Anglesea's Tegan Caldwell in the upcoming Australian Netball League, that begins later this month.

As for the possibility of one day lining up alongside her older sister who plays with the Perth-based West Coast Fever in the ANZ Championship Kelsey said that would be a dream come true.

"In the next few years that is a massive goal for me," she said of her ambitions to play in the elite netball competition.
