Ramsay sights on Olympic future

GEELONG gymnast Emily Ramsay has been touted as a possible future Olympian after impressing at the recent Women's Artistic national championships.

Ramsay picked up three medals from the week-long tournament in Perth, earning her an invite to train with the Australian Junior International squad. The national squad's head coach Peggy Liddick approached the talented 12-year-old after she won a gold medal for the vault.

Ramsay also won bronze on the bars and contributed to the Victorian team's silver medal for overall performance. Her Geelong YMCA coach Rachel Crawford said she did an amazing job and the invitation to train with the squad was done with a view towards her possibly being chosen permanently in the lead up to the 2016 Olympics in Brazil."She worked her butt off, it's pretty tough but Emily's very dedicated," Crawford said."Normally gymnasts are recruited between the ages of seven and nine and hit their peak at 16 to 17 so it's great Emily was recognised."At the moment Ramsay is more focused on training with a new squad than her Olympic prospects."Yes I'm pretty excited but some areas will be hard because I won't be used to the coaches," Ramsay said."I would love to go to the Olympics though."Emily, a member of the Barwon Sports Academy, trains more than 16 hours a week. Article Provided by Geelong Advertiser
